Brno

Brno is the centre of South Moravia and with almost 400.000 inhabitants is the second largest city in the Czech Republic. Everyone loves it for its friendly and tranquil atmosphere. It is worth taking a stroll through its historic little lanes as well as going to see its famous monuments. The beautiful dominant features of the city – Spilberk Castle and the Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul – must not be missed. The history of the city is certainly just as interesting below the surface, in the spaces of its mysterious underground. Also musts on the visitor’s itinerary are the Royal Labyrinth under Zelny Trh and the ossuary under St. James Church, the largest of its kind in Europe after that in Paris.

A pearl of modern architecture is the world- -renowned Villa Tugendhat– a work of the German architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe from 1930, recorded on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Another three unique villas are also open – the Löw-Beer, Stiassni and Jurkovic villas. Brno is an inspiring metropolis, where such giants as the composer Leos Janacek or the world famous founder of genetics Gregor Johann Mendel lived and worked. Brno has a thriving cultural life all year round, whether in its theatres, concert halls, galleries and museums, or in open-air festivals. Brno’s theatre, ballet, opera and musical venues are among the best. In Brno, not just lovers of classical music will find what they want, but also fans of jazz and the club scene.

In Brno’s restaurants and cafés there is a very relaxed atmosphere, romantic and entertaining. The colourful range of cuisines available at prices to match every pocket will astonish every visitor. Brno is an intelligent city with a youthful spirit – there are a number of universities and scientific research institutions. More and more often technology companies are linking to the academic sphere given the qualified workforce that makes its way to Brno from around the world. It is in this area that Brno is among the best and is one of the most progressive centres of science, research and innovation in Central Europe. The youthful spirit of the city is ensured by the presence of 75 thousand university students. Brno Observatory and Planetarium, the VIDA! Science Centre, the Mendelianum and other institutions present various branches of science in an entertaining form and offer the public a varied programme.

The city has also won renown in sports – the wonderful atmosphere at the matches of the Kometa Brno ice hockey club has no peer in the country, Czech baseball has long been dominated by the Brno Dragons and South Moravia’s metropolis also hosts the biggest sporting event of the year, the World Motorcycle Grand Prix at the Masaryk Circuit. One of the most famous clubs in Czech footballing history, Zbrojovka Brno is also active here and other sports are also played here at the highest levels, including basketball, volleyball, athletics and floorball.

South Moravian Region is the organizer of the 8th Summer Olympic Games for Children and Youth which will take place in Brno from 24th June to 29th June 2017. This event will be attended by 4 300 young sportsmen from all regions of Czech Republic.
